Alex Warren Brooklyn Concert reviews
Too Much Like a Cover Band
This was the second time I saw Alex Warren. The first time was Ronnie Van Zant’s last appearance in Chicago in 1977. The crowd then was a little bigger, on the order of 90,000 plus, but this time I was much, much closer to the stage. I was somewhat disappointed in the set list as the only song that wasn’t from the Ronnie Van Zant era was the opening song which is the title cut from the latest album.
They seemed more like a top-notch cover band than a band that has released 8 albums of new material in the Johnny Van Zant era, now that there is only one member left that originally performed the numbers from the rest of the set, and the fact that they pretty much performed the songs note for note from the originals. I thought I would hear a few more numbers from the last two albums, both of which charted within the top 20 in the US Billboard 200. Maybe it’s because the Johnny era material hasn’t sold well on the West Coast?
They do put on a good show with Johnny doing much more stage banter than Ronnie ever did. The band is very tight and polished musically. Johnny’s voice lacked some of the oomph that I’ve seen on concert DVD’s, and the two backup singers (Dale Krantz-Rossington and Carol Chase) seemed off in their vocals. Also, at times, Rickey Medlocke’s guitar seemed to be down in the mix along with the piano, but this could be because I was so close to the right speaker stack that I wasn’t getting much from the stage left side. Maybe there were monitor problems? At one point, Dale gave a funny look to Carol as if to say one or both were struggling?
All in all, it was great to hear those older songs played live, but to me, it seemed like just another stop on the tour.
